What Is ALE Housing? A Displaced Family's Guide to Temporary Housing After Home Damage

A kitchen fire, a burst pipe, a tree through the roof — and suddenly your family cannot live at home for two months. In the middle of that terrible week, an adjuster will use a term you may never have heard: ALE. Understanding it quickly is the difference between two months in a cramped hotel and two months in a real home.

What is ALE (Additional Living Expense) housing?

ALE — Additional Living Expense — is the part of a standard homeowners or renters insurance policy that pays the extra costs of living elsewhere while your damaged home is repaired: temporary housing, and often increased food and commuting costs. Your insurer (or a housing company working for them) arranges or reimburses a comparable place to live. Furnished monthly rentals like Greenpoint Getaway — a three-bedroom townhouse suite in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at $9,900 per month, 30-day minimum — work with ALE placements directly, including invoicing the carrier or housing company rather than the family.

Why displaced families choose a furnished home over a hotel

  • Kids keep their routines. A repair timeline of 30, 60, or 120 days is a school semester — staying in the neighborhood keeps children at their own schools, parents at their own jobs and commutes.

  • Real meals, real laundry. A fully stocked kitchen and a full-size in-unit washer and dryer — the two things hotel living takes away first — are exactly what a displaced family needs most.

  • Room to be a family. Three private bedrooms — two full-size, one twin — plus a living room, so a hard season is not spent in one room. A pack-n-play, high chair, and kids' play corner are already here.

  • Pets, honestly handled. For insurance placements we consider pets on request with a one-time $500 pet fee — because displaced families should not have to board the dog on top of everything else.

How the placement works

Tell your adjuster or temporary-housing coordinator that you want a furnished rental rather than a hotel — you have a say in this. We work with the major ALE and temporary-housing relocation providers: direct billing to the housing company or carrier, a W-9 and certificate of insurance on request, flexible terms from 30 days up, and extensions accommodated when the contractor's timeline slips — which it usually does. Self check-in by code means a family can arrive the same day a placement is approved.

One honest note on fit

The three bedrooms share one full bathroom — ideal for a couple or a family of four to five, not for six adults. We say this to every adjuster up front; a placement that fits is one that lasts the whole repair. Families new to the neighborhood can get oriented with our guide to staying in Greenpoint with kids and the neighborhood guide.
