Halloween in Greenpoint: A Family's Fall Weekend in Brooklyn

New York does Halloween in two registers. Manhattan has the famous Village parade — spectacular, enormous, and not built for a five-year-old's bedtime. Brooklyn's brownstone neighborhoods have the other version: pumpkins on every stoop, skeletons climbing townhouse facades, and kids trick-or-treating down blocks where the shopkeepers know them. Greenpoint does the second kind beautifully.

Is Greenpoint good for Halloween with kids?

Yes — Greenpoint's quiet, tree-lined residential blocks do stoop-decorating and door-to-door trick-or-treating the classic way, McCarren Park (an 8-minute walk from our door) hosts family Halloween happenings most years, and the avenues fill with costumed kids on the day itself. A family staying at Greenpoint Getaway — a furnished three-bedroom townhouse suite with kids' gear already on site — lands in the middle of it, on exactly the kind of block the holiday was made for.

The week around the day

  • Stoop-spotting walks: the blocks between Manhattan Avenue and the waterfront turn into a free outdoor exhibit through late October — an after-dinner ritual kids ask to repeat.

  • McCarren Park in costume: playgrounds plus fall-festival energy on the surrounding blocks — check the park's calendar for that year's kid events.

  • Paczki fuel: a Polish bakery stop before the candy marathon is a parenting move we endorse — the bakeries of Little Poland are minutes away.

  • The day after: November 1 brings the NYC Marathon up Manhattan Avenue most years — cowbells at mile 12 make a spectacular encore weekend.

Why the home base matters more with kids

Halloween with children is a logistics operation — costume changes, early dinners, the post-sugar wind-down. A hotel room fights you on all of it. A three-bedroom home with a real kitchen, a washer-dryer for the costume that meets a puddle, blackout shades for recovery sleep, and a twin bedroom plus pack-n-play, high chair, and play corner already set up — that is the machine the week actually needs. Our NYC-with-kids guide and the multi-generation trip guide cover the full setup — including the honest note that our three bedrooms share one full bathroom, which suits a family of four or five.

Make it the fall month, not the fall weekend

We host stays of 30 days and up — and October is the argument for it: Halloween, the marathon, fall in Little Poland, and the prettiest month McCarren Park has. Check availability and book direct — it saves 5-15% versus the platforms.

A 13-week New York assignment is the one travel nurses talk about — and the one where housing math gets real. Manhattan rents eat a stipend whole; the far boroughs give it back in commute time. The mo
