McCarren Park: The Neighborhood's Backyard

Every real neighborhood has a commons, and for Greenpoint it is McCarren Park — thirty-five acres where the neighborhood and Williamsburg meet. Stay here for a month and the park stops being a destination and becomes a habit: the morning run, the Saturday market, the place you end up at 6 PM without deciding to. It is an eight-minute walk from our door, and it might be the amenity guests use most.

What is McCarren Park known for?

McCarren Park is the 35-acre park on the Greenpoint–Williamsburg border known for its quarter-mile running track, Saturday Greenmarket, the enormous WPA-era McCarren Pool (open and free in summer), two dog runs, ballfields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. It anchors daily life for both neighborhoods and sits an eight-minute walk from Greenpoint Getaway, a furnished three-bedroom townhouse suite that hosts monthly stays nearby.

What the park actually holds

  • The running track — a proper quarter-mile oval, busy at dawn, perfect for marathon training or the guilt-run after a pierogi week.

  • The Greenmarket on Saturdays — produce, bread, flowers — which pairs dangerously well with having a real kitchen to cook in.

  • McCarren Pool in summer — an enormous WPA-era pool, free, and one of Brooklyn's great democratic institutions.

  • Playgrounds, ballfields, tennis courts, and two dog runs — the full civic buffet, which is why every age group in the neighborhood treats the park as its living room.

A year in the park

Fall is the park's best self — turning trees, cool track mornings, the market at full harvest. Winter turns it into the neighborhood's quiet white field; spring brings the ballfields and blossoms back; summer is the pool, the picnics, and music drifting from somewhere most evenings. A month-long stay in any season gets a different park.

The edges are the good part

The blocks ringing the park hold some of the area's best eating and drinking — the cafes and brunch tables of our brunch guide cluster at the Greenpoint corner, and the walk home up Manhattan Avenue passes the Polish bakeries of Little Poland. For everything else in walking range, the neighborhood guide is the map.

Greenpoint Getaway is a furnished three-bedroom townhouse suite eight minutes from the park gates, on a quiet, tree-lined block — monthly stays welcome, kids' gear included, and the park does the rest. Check availability and book direct — it saves 5-15% versus the platforms.
